Washington offensive coordinator Ryan Grub will remain with the Huskies after turning down Alabama’s offer to be the Crimson Tide’s play caller, according to multiple reports Tuesday and confirmed by 247Sports subsidiary Dawgman. Grubb met with the Alabama football coach Nick Saban about Monday’s job in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Dawgman was the first to report Monday that Grubb was hitting the tide. Alabama and Saban are still looking for a new offensive coordinator after two years of playing Bill O’Brien went to the New England Patriots of the NFL.
Earlier this offseason, Grubb received interest from Texas A&M for the job of the Aggies’ offensive coordinator. A&M hired Bobby Petrino.
Grubb led an offense that ranked second nationally last fall and signed a two-year contract extension in November.
Grubb’s extension, which he signed shortly after the Apple Cup, extended him by two years and got him a pay rise to $1.45 million for 2023, $1.55 million in 2024, and $1.67 million for dollars in 2025. After Washington’s big win over Texas at the Alamo Bowl, he was courted by Texas A&M and several other schools and received a second raise that takes his annual salary to nearly $2 million per season.
Last season, under Grubbs’ stewardship, the Huskies ranked first nationally in passing yards (376.7) and first downs (27.4) per game, while also leading the nation in third-down conversions (57%). and completing 10 yards or more (182).
“My initial emotional reaction to being here (January 2022) was that without really knowing anything about Washington, this place could be incredibly special,” Grubb said recently. “Now that we’re going through a full year and seeing the support of the community and the children who are part of this program, this place is incredibly special. That’s why I’m happy to be here.”
Michael Penix’s development is something to watch when talking about Grubb. Penix had the best season of his collegiate career in 2022, throwing for a program record 4,641 while completing over 65% of his passes for 31 touchdowns and just eight interceptions. After the Alamo Bowl win over Texas, Penix called, according to Grubb.
“Yes, it’s amazing” Penix said he broke the program’s record. “Obviously I couldn’t do it without the guys around me, starting with coach Grubb who does the game calls, the offensive line that blocks their tails every game and gives me time in the bag. I always say we have receivers out there. There’s that – we have receivers out there that will go get the ball whenever it’s in the air.
“It makes it easy for me to just go out there and just treat it like practice, just go out there and pitch and catch and keep trusting the process and keep trusting the play call and everything and our preparation and things like that so that we can come on game day go out and run. … It was definitely a blessing that I was able to achieve that, but obviously I couldn’t do it without the guys around me.

Prior to Washington, Grubb spent time at Fresno State (2017-21) and Eastern Michigan (2014-16) as an offensive line coach on both programs.
