Where to get rid of your Christmas tree in Texas

Christmas has come and gone and now it’s time to get rid of your holly jolly tree.

Before getting rid of your tree, make sure all lights, tinsel, ornaments, and any other materials that are not part of the original tree, including tree stands, are removed. When you get rid of your tree, it will likely be chopped up and made into mulch.

As a safety warning, please never burn your Christmas tree. This is how creosote builds up in your chimney; Not to mention that it could cause a fire.

Here’s what you should do to get rid of your Christmas tree:

austin

If you are a City of Austin curbside customer, you may leave your Christmas tree curbside on your normal pickup day for recycling. Trees over 6 feet should be cut in half.

All other residents are urged to leave their trees at Zilker Park for the first two weekends in January (January 2nd, January 8th, January 9th) from 10am to 2pm to be composted into Dillo Dirt.

For curbside pickup, leave your tree outside on your regular garbage collection day. You can also drop off your tree at the following locations, but first contact the Dallas Zero Waste Hotline at 214-670-4475:

Houston

Residents of the city of Houston can leave their tree outside on the curb for recycling on their scheduled Tree Drop Day. You can also drop off your tree at one of several free locations from December 26th to the second Monday in January:

San Antonio

Residents of the city of San Antonio can drop off their trees for recycling at the following locations. Please cut your tree in half if it is over 6 feet. Smaller trees can be placed in the normal recycling bins on normal collection days, but the lid must be fully closed.
