Boulder crashes into house, narrowly missing residents

A security camera captured the moment a boulder fell into the home of a 65-year-old woman in Hawaii over the weekend, rolling past her as she went into her living room to watch TV. “All I heard was the bang as the glass broke off the sliding door, so I backed up and I think it went right through me,” Caroline Sasaki told KITV of the newly built hillside home, bumped into one Car collapsed, crashed through a glass door and went across the living room floor and crashed into another wall before landing in a bedroom, according to the Honolulu Police Department. “I didn’t see the video, but they said if I took another step, I probably wouldn’t be here,” Sasaki said. The Honolulu Fire Department reported another similar incident involving a 2-by-2-foot boulder hitting a home’s retaining wall but not making it onto the property, Dawn Takeuchi Apuna, director of Honolulu’s Department of Planning and Permitting, told KITV issued a statement on the incident at Sasaki’s home, saying that an investigation is ongoing but the city is unable to identify any wrongdoing by the excavation worker determine the responsibility of the developer. “It would be irresponsible and premature to point the finger at any particular party, landowner or event without knowing the full details of what happened. We will share more details as they develop,” Apuna’s statement said. Apuna also said she reached out to Sasaki after watching video of the boulder falling into her home, “out of concern for her her and to answer any questions she may have. We have assured her that we will investigate and report back to her as soon as possible.”

The 5ft by 5ft rock plowed through a concrete block wall of the newly built hillside home, hit a car, crashed through a glass door and went across the living room floor and struck another wall before landing in a bedroom, according to the Honolulu Police Department .

“I didn’t watch the video, but they said if I went one step further, I probably wouldn’t be here,” Sasaki said.

Sasaki said her family is about to move into the house and has been there for about a week. She suspects the boulder came from ongoing excavation work nearby, which she is urging city leaders to stop.

“I’ve been afraid of this happening since they started,” Sasaki said.

After this brief conversation, Sasaki said she was even more determined to put an end to the work.

The Honolulu Fire Department reported another similar incident involving a 2 foot by 2 foot boulder hitting the retaining wall of a home but not making it onto the property.

Honolulu Department of Planning and Permits director Dawn Takeuchi Apuna issued a statement to KITV in response to the incident at Sasaki’s home, saying an investigation is ongoing but the city could find no wrongdoing by the developer responsible excavation work.

“It would be irresponsible and premature to point the finger at any particular party, landowner or event without knowing the full details of the incident. We will announce more details as they develop,” Apuna’s statement said.

Additionally, Apuna said she reached out to Sasaki after seeing video of the boulder falling into her home “out of concern for her and to answer any questions she might have. We have assured her that we will investigate and report back to her as soon as possible.”
