Security footage shows the woman walking down a hallway when the massive rock broke through the cinder block wall of the home and shot past just feet in front of her.
The boulder, which officials said was about 5 feet (1.5 m) tall and wide, left a trail of destruction as it rolled down the hallway and settled in a bedroom, Hawaii News Now reported.
“All I heard was the bang as the glass shattered off the sliding door, so I backed up and I think it went right through me,” said Caroline Sasaki, the woman who almost got hit. opposite the point of sale.
Sasaki and her family had only moved into the house a week ago before the boulder came in like a wrecking ball.
She and other local residents believe excavation work at a nearby proposed development caused the boulder to collapse, but the development’s owner insisted the project was not to blame.
“That’s from way up, I was looking at one of these rocks about 50 feet from the top of the property and landed over there and then came down here,” Li said KHON.
“So it hit one of the cables that was supposed to stop it and the cable snapped,” he explained. “That took a lot of energy, otherwise this damage would be much greater.”
Li said he will bring engineers to inspect the project and strengthen a barrier wall along his project, according to the outlet.
Sasaki said, “The permitting and planning department, the emergency management department, the mayor, the city council, they all should get involved because people’s lives are at stake.”
The 65-year-old hasn’t watched the video but said she’s grateful that her ailing leg is causing her to walk a little slower.
“They said if I went one step further, I probably wouldn’t be here.”
