San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy injured his elbow during the NFC Championship against the Philadelphia Eagles and had to fight through after backup Josh Johnson retired with a concussion.
After initial testing, the 49ers believed Purdy suffered a UCL injury, although they are unsure of the severity of that injury, ESPN reported.
The Niners hope the UCL, which is common in baseball and requires surgery on Tommy John, isn’t torn. If that’s the case, Purdy only needs six weeks to recover and can continue with his offseason training leading up to training camp.

If things get worse and surgery is required, Purdy’s availability at the start of training camp would be an option.
San Francisco will determine the severity of the injury after further testing on Monday.
49ERS’ BROCK PURDY WAS FORCED BACK INTO THE NFC CHAMPIONSHIP AFTER WALKING WITH AN ELBOW INJURY
Purdy’s injury came as he attempted to make a down pass when Eagles edge rusher Haason Reddick, who has had quite a playoff so far, hit him before his arm came forward, resulting in a fumble and the field in favor of the house changed team.
Purdy’s arm was clearly injured when Reddick’s hand hit him before the throw.
Johnson came on for Purdy but was ruled out after suffering a concussion from another pass rush by the Eagles that forced a hit.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan had no choice but to get Purdy back in the game, but he couldn’t throw the football more than five yards. The offense then became one dimensional and the Eagles enjoyed their running games no matter how difficult Shanahan tried to deal with them.

In the end, a disappointing 31-7 loss for the Niners ended their season and sparked a winning streak that stretched back before Purdy took over as the team’s starter following Jimmy Garoppolo’s injury at the end of the season.
It was a fantastic rookie performance for Purdy — he’s one of the last contenders for AP Offensive Rookie of the Year — but it wasn’t how he imagined his season would end.

Now he’s hoping his second campaign doesn’t start too late as he has a legitimate shot at being the starter in Week 1 of next year after what he’s shown the 49ers this season.
