One dead after incident on I-79 in Washington County

A man has died after an incident on Interstate 79 in Washington County Sunday afternoon that halted traffic on the road for hours through Sunday evening. The Washington County Coroner’s Office said in a report released Sunday evening that 43-year-old David Luther of New Alexandria was pronounced dead along Interstate 79 in South Strabane Township just after 4:30 p.m. Sunday. According to the report, a Pennsylvania State Police Trooper stopped to assist a motorist in the median near mile 40.5. Luther then approached the scene in his vehicle, caught the police officer’s attention, and began making erratic statements. The police officer returned to his squad car, and when they returned to Luther’s vehicle, they found Luther unresponsive with an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound. The official cause and manner of death are still undetermined, the autopsy results are pending. PennDOT Pittsburgh tweeted around 4:30 p.m. that police activity on the southbound lanes of I-79 between exits 41 and 43 had closed all lanes. Lane restrictions also applied to the north. Both the northbound and southbound lanes reopened at 6:30 p.m. Sunday. This is an evolving story. Stay tuned to Pittsburgh’s Action News 4 for updates.
